Nitro Baseball

We would like to officially introduce Joe Gayda as our new head baseball coach.

Chili Dinner and Holiday Concert

The Nitro Showcats Annual Chili Dinner is scheduled for this evening,  December 15, 2015 at Nitro High School. Dinner will be held in the commons from 5:00pm until 6:30pm.  Price is $8.00 and includes chili, crackers, dessert, drink, and the show. Concert time is 7:00pm and  will be held in the auditorium. The Show will feature The Nitro Showcats, The Nitro Sophisticats Girl's Ensemble, Nitro High School Dance Class, and The Nitro High School Baton Twirling Team. We are also pleased to announce the Kanawha Kordsmen  as our special guests, who will also be performing.  Come out for a great show and a great time.

Important Senior Trip Information

The senior trip will be on Friday, May 13th. We will be going to Cedar Point. Cost of the trip is $100 and includes park admission, unlimited drinks, and transportation. To reserve your spot on the bus, you can bring in a $25 non-refundable cash deposit beginning Monday, December 14. Deposit must be made by Friday, December 18 to guarantee your spot. Any questions or to turn in your deposit, see Mrs. Douglas in the office.

Branches Domestic Violence Donations

The Nitro High School Dance Team along with Winfield High Dance Team will be collecting diapers, gently used or new bras, and feminine hygiene products for Branches Domestic Violence Shelter. There will be a box set up for donations in the office and at basketball games. They will be collecting donations until December 18th.

Money for College

Need money for college? We can help with that! Our school is hosting a financial aid workshop on Thursday, December 3rd at 6:00pm in the auditorium. Financial aid experts will be on hand to answer questions about state and federal financial aid, including West Virginia’s PROMISE Scholarship and the West Virginia Higher Education Grant. They will also cover how to fill out the FAFSA and other financial aid forms. Any student planning to pursue a certificate program, a two-year college degree, or a four-year college degree should attend.

Cathy Harless-Fall Blood Drive

The Nitro Fall Blood Drive will be November 19th in the gym.  Students can sign up in my room (209) anytime during the day and after school till 3:30. If we get between 71 to 100 good pints of blood the American Red Cross will donate $500.00 towards a scholarship.  All students, 16 and up are encouraged to participate.  Not only will you be helping in the quest to save a life, you could also receive a scholarship towards money for college! (Parental consent is mandatory for 16 yr olds.)

Winter Formal

Winter Formal will be January 23rd, 2016 at the University of Charleston from 8:00 to 11:00 pm. Special ticket deals will be given the first of November. From November 2nd to the 6th, Single tickets will be $15 and couple tickets will be $30. Then the rest of the month tickets will be $20 and $40.00 for couples. December tickets will be $25 and $50 and January will be $30 and $60.00

College Colors Day

 In celebration of “College Application and Exploration Week”, our school is hosting a “College Colors Day!” Students and staff are encouraged to wear the colors of their favorite college or university. Our “College Colors Day” will be held this Thursday, October 29th.

Blood Drive

Blood Drive, November 19th, Main Gym from 8:30 to 2:00. Students can give at age 16 with parental consent. Those students 17 and older do not need a parental consent. Forms and more details can be picked up in Room 209 daily.

KCS is working on an issue that would not allow student iPads to get on the internet from their homes.  The issue was first reported Monday afternoon.

Attention Elementary and Middle School Parents


This Friday October 30th, 2015, will be the 2nd Annual Smarter Balance Recognition night at the Nitro High School versus Huntington High School football game.  We will be sending home invitations and tickets this week to all elementary school and middle school students, in the Nitro High School feed area, that scored mastery or above on the Smarter Balance test,
The students will be recognized at halftime at the football game by walking/running across the field.  The students really enjoyed it last year so please make plans to attend.

Senior Night will be Friday,October 30th - Senior football, cheer, band, cross country, golf and ROTC members and their parents/guardians will be recognized. Recognition will be pregame - starting at 6:45.

IMPORTANT for Seniors to Read

Important message for 12th grade students:  It is WV State Law that all 12th grade students must show proof of age appropriate Tdap and MCV4 vaccinations before entering school on August 10th.
All seniors must have had one dose of Tdap and one dose of MCV4 vaccine.  Only one dose of MCV4 is required if the first dose was administered after their 16th birthday.  Seniors must provide the school nurse, Teresa Evans, with documentation from their doctor or the health department that shots are up-to-date.  If you have not turned in your documentation you will be excluded from school until we receive it.

To help out the Nitro Police for their Halloween Hoedown for every bag of candy an individual student brings in they will be given that many tickets to be placed in a drawing to the lucky person to Pie In The Face an administrator. Bring candy to Mrs Harless in Room 209 to have a chance.
Pictures of the Administrators and Officer Blake will placed in the office and brought out during lunch. The one who has the most money at the end of the week will be the recipient of the infamous Pie In The Face.
Immediately after the game Friday night there will be a "Drive In" type movie night with a Scary Movie to be shown. Tickets are $5.00 a piece and 75 tickets MUST be sold in order to have the movie. Tickets can be purchased in Room 209 or during both lunches.

The Nitro High Chapter of the National Honor Society will be having their Penny Wars next week as well. Each grade level is encouraged to bring pennies for their grade bucket. But...there is a catch...anything other than pennies counts against the grade level the money is in. So if you are a Senior and put silver coins in the Junior bucket the Juniors get negative points!! Sounds like a great way to help one grade win while another tries to get out of debt! Save up your pennies and your silver and help your grade win the War!

 Parent Teacher conference will be Monday, October 12 from 2:00 - 8:00 PM.   On Monday, October 5  your child received the form for you to mark times in which you would like to be scheduled.  Please have your child return the form to their teachers to schedule your designated time.  Once teachers have scheduled times on the form your child should return it to you.

Key Club is back!!! PSAT - $15 due by Friday, October 9 - See your counselor

Any 10th or 11th grade student can sign up for the PSAT.  Cost is $15, payable to Nitro High School, and due by by October 9 to Mr. Hayhurst.  The test will be given on Wednesday, October 14th at 8:00 AM.  11th grade students who take this exam will be automatically screened for the national Merit Scholarship program.

Flu Vaccines

The Kanawha County/Charleston Health Department will be administering Flu Vaccines to Nitro High School Students on Thursday morning, September 24.  Today, Friday, September 18, your child received a consent form.  Please complete the front and back of the form, sign, and return to the front office attendance clerk, Ms. Kinder by Tuesday, September 22.

Lacrosse Club

The Kanawha Valley Spartans Lacrosse Club is looking for players for the 2016 spring season.  The Spartans will play a full schedule  of lacrosse teams from high schools and counties around West Virginia.  All players must meet the WVSSAC guidelines to participate.  Information can be found in the office.

Majorette Festival

The Majorette Festival will be Tuesday, September 22nd.  Tickets can be purchased from Mr. Brooks for $7 in advance or at the gate for $8.

Senior Graduation Pictures – Class of 2016

Each Senior will need THREE pictures for the 2016 graduation ceremony.  Please have each photo in by the deadline stated below.  Failure to turn in pictures by the stated deadlines will result in your photos not being used.

All pictures can be sent digitally to NHSsenior@gmail.com or you may bring in a hard copy to Ms. Grant or Mrs. Petry.  Hard copies will be returned at senior check out at the end of the 2016 school year.  We encourage early submissions!


1.  Baby picture:      Deadline:  Friday, December 18, 2015

Guidelines:  Must have clothing on (no nudity), no play guns or weapons of any kind in the picture.   Graduating senior should be the only person in the baby photo.  Try and use a picture 3 years old or under.

2.  Casual Senior Picture:  Deadline:  Friday, March 11, 2016

                                    Guidelines:  Needs to be a casual photo taken of yourself this school year.  The picture does not have to be professionally done, but it can be.  Ms. Grant or Mrs. Petry would be happy to take a picture of you outside in a nice setting at the school, just stop by and set up a time.  Pick a picture where the audience can see your face, close-up pictures work best.

The baby and casual senior pictures will be combined together in a slide that will be used during the graduation ceremony.


3.  Formal Senior Picture:           Deadline:  This photo will be taken at the school by LifeTouch Photography on October 30, 2015.

                                                           THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL, you MUST have this picture taken.

 You need to make sure that you have your picture taken on October 30.  If you are absent from school on October 30, you can visit LifeTouch Studios in Cross Lanes.  Make-up formal pictures must be taken by March 11, 2016.

All hair accessories, necklaces and earrings must be school colors or simple silver or gold.  If you have on an item that isn’t school colors, you will be asked to remove it before your picture will be taken.

This picture will be projected above you when you cross the stage to receive your diploma.


Please email any other pictures/videos you take with your friends in class, the hallways, at sporting events, or any other school function to NHSsenior@gmail.com.  We encourage you to send in lots of photos and videos to help make the 2016 Senior Video the best yet.

Tomorrow, 9/15/15 will be Tie Dye Night at the Girls Soccer game.  Game time is 5:30 and we hope to see everyone at the girls game.

On Tuesday, September 1st,  during your child's English class they will be presented with information on suicide prevention. A new state requirement, Jamie's Law, states that all secondary students must be presented with information, and provided with an opportunity to have a discussion.

"Tailgate on the Wildside" Friday 5:00 to 7:30 at the soccer field shelter.  The menu is Barbeque on a bun, cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, drink, dessert, for $10.00.  Food by T and M Meats.  We will have carry out boxes as well.    See a Showcats member to purchase your tickets.

PEP Club stands for “Promote Enthusiastic Pride.”  The PEP Club of Nitro High School is the backbone of our school spirit and it is their role to motivate and encourage the participation of the student body in school related events.  We want to create an energetic atmosphere during all of our sporting events. The bigger the PEP Club, the more thrilling sporting events will be.

PEP Club welcomes everyone! As a member of PEP Club, you are asked to attend all home sporting events and wear one of your Nitro t-shirts.  We ask that you participate cheering on our Wildcats, from the Wildside. 

The Wildside at Nitro Nation
The Wild Side is our student section at all home sporting events.  It is a visual reminder for our players that they are supported by the students. To be in the Wild Side, you just have to wear your Black, Red, Grey or White and cheer your Wildcats on.
