Ski Club

 For students interested in participating in Ski Club, Ms. Sarah Chandler will be having a meeting during NHS Block on Wednesday, November 8th in Baker room 104. Ski Club is open to experienced and beginner skiers and snowboarders! The club will take five ski trips to Winterplace beginning in January. Other details, along with prices, will be discussed during the meeting on Wednesday.

Sock-ember

The student groups of Nitro High School have declared November "Sock-ember"! From November 1st through November 15th we will be collecting socks to donate to shelters, Veteran's Hospitals and other needy groups. Socks can be given to Mrs. Gordon, Mrs. Harless, Mr. Shamblin or left in the office. Any style, color, or size will be put to good use!

Blood Drive

Nitro High School's Fall Blood Drive will be held in the main Gym, November 16th from 8:30 to 2:00. Anyone 16 years old (with a Parental Consent Form) or older can participate by giving blood. We encourage students that can to sign up to give two units of blood as the need is great this time of year. YOU MUST BRING A PHOTO ID OR HAVE HAD YOUR PICTURE TAKEN FOR THIS YEAR'S YEARBOOK. The time has come to walk across Nitro High School's football field with honor and pride as you display your accomplishments and future endeavors...Senior Night is November 3rd! Senior Members of ROTC, Band, Football, Cheerleading, Dance, and Cross Country should come pick up a form from Mrs. Kerber in room 215.

Pride of Park Avenue

Congratulations to Mr. Brooks and the Nitro High School Marching WildCats on their outstanding performance and at the Annual Daily Mail Kanawha County Majorette Festival. The Marching WildCats received Gold Medals, the highest ranking possible in the Drum Line category and Drum Major Category. The Band was awarded a Silver Medal in Marching, Band Playing, Color Guard, and General Effect. The Marching WildCats were awarded 2nd Runner Up to Festival Grand Champion. Way to go Mr. Brooks and The Pride of Park Avenue.

National Merit Semifinalist

Congratulations to Erica Larijani who has been recognized as a National Merit Semifinalist! She earned this recognition based on her scores on the PSAT/National Merit Qualifying Test, which is taken by about 1.6 million high school juniors. She represents less than 1% of US high school seniors who took the exam. Congratulations Erica on such an amazing accomplishment!

Juniors and Seniors interested in potentially attending WVU, they will be holding a Meet WVU event in Charleston on Tuesday, October 3 at 5:30 pm at the Cultural Center. Only one form is to be fill out per locker.  Both students' WVEIS Number needs to be on one form.  The form will be open until August 12th, 2018.  You will receive an email on the morning on August 13th, 2018 with you locker assignment and combination.  The form will reopen on the morning of August 14th, 2018 and will close at Noon on August 14th, 2018.

DECA will meet as a whole group one last time on Thursday, May 11th in Mrs. Marshall's room during Anchor. Please join us as we celebrate the end of a fabulous 2016-2017 DECA season. The officer selection process for next school year will begin and officers will be named prior to the end of school.

All seniors will need to report by 7:30am on Thursday, May 11th in the auditorium. You will need to have your KCS issued iPad, charging block and charging cord.

Showcats

The ShowCats Show Choir is on an active search for 10 more boys to complete their 2018 roster. A tryout will take place on Tuesday May 9, 2017 at 3:30 in the choir room. This will be for any boy who is interested in auditioning. Our goal is to have a group with 25 boys. We would like to compete at Show Choir Nationals in Nashville, TN in the Spring of 2018 but cannot do so without more men. See Ms. Amy for details in Baker 126 or any ShowCat member.

ShowCats

The Nitro ShowCats are in need of 10 more men to complete their roster for the 2018 competition season. We are making plans to travel to Nashville TN to compete at Show Choir Nationals next year, but cannot do this without atleast 20-25 gentlemen. An audition will be held on Tuesday, May 9th at 3:15 to audition any new members. We are also looking for 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, 2 saxes, an electric guitar player, a pianist, and a synth player. Please consider being a part of this outstanding, winning tradition at Nitro High School.

 Prom is Next Weekend! Make sure to get your prom tickets before May 4th. See Mrs. Kerber in room 215 during anchor, lab, or 1st lunch. Price is currently $35 per ticket but goes up to $40 on the 27th! Also, make sure to get the dance contracts in to Mrs. Kerber or you will not be permitted to attend the dance.

Showcats

What do Lenny Kravitz, Kevin Costner, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tina Fey, Walter Payton, Ashton Kutcher and Amy Adams have in common? They all were in their High School Show Choir when they were in high school. On April 25- 28 you will have the opportunity to join the ranks of the many who made the choice to also be a part of this award winning tradition in their school. On April 25-27 there will be a workshop from 4:00-6:00 to show you exactly what to do. On Friday April 28, show up at 3:00 with your favorite song, and sing whatever you want. Our goal is to put 50 on stage in ShowCats and 44 in SophistiCats. Come out and help us make this happen. All parts are needed, both male and female.

Dinner Theater

The 18th Annual Show Choir Dinner Theater will take place on Sunday, April 23rd, at Beni Kedem Temple in Charleston. Show Times are 1:00, 3:30, and 6:00. Tickets prices are $18.00, and will include Baked Steak, Mashed Potatoes and gravy, Green Beans, Tossed Salad, Hot Rolls, Drink, and Dessert. Our biggest Silent Auction to date will be yours for the bidding, with a special Mother's Day Boutique for kids. Tickets are on sale now from any ShowCat or SophistiCat member, or from Ms. Amy in the choir room.

ShowCat's Dinner Theater and Competition Results

Save the date now for our Annual Nitro ShowCat and SophistiCat Dinner Theater. Come out for a great dinner and a great time at Beni Kedem on April 23rd. Show times will be 12:30, 3:30, and 6:00. Ticket Price is $18.00, a reserved table for $250.00. Menu will be River's Edge Baked Steak, mashed potatoes, green beens, rolls, salad, dessert, and beverage. Silent Auction will be available also. Congratulations to the Nitro ShowCats for placing in the top three in Asheville Ohio, Teays Valley High School Show Choir Competition this past weekend. The ShowCats rocked the stage, as Hayley Magann was awarded Outstanding Performer, and Louisa Smith was awarded Overall Outstanding Female Soloist. Finally, the Nitro ShowCats brought home 1st runner up to Grand Champion. Way to go ShowCats! You make Nitro proud, and are a great representation of our fine students at Nitro High School.

Baseball Tickets

Showcats

At Loveland Ohio, on February 25th, The Nitro ShowCats were awarded 2nd in their class, moved on to finals, and were awarded 4th runner up to Festival Grand Champions. John Brumley was awarded outstanding male soloist, and Angel Graham was awarded Outstanding Performer.

On March 4th, Louisa Smith was selected as a participant on the West Virginia Music Educators Honors Concert and was also selected as a member of the West Virginia All State Chorus.

On March 10th, 27 members of the ShowCats and SophistiCats were selected to the Kanawha County All County Chorus where they performed an outstanding concert, and made Nitro proud, wearing their brand new robes. Louisa Smith was selected as a soloist for Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Chelyan Smith was selected as a member of an Octet featured on It Takes a Village. Way to go Kids.

The all night party of the year is on Saturday, May 6th. Math Field Day Winners

Congratulations to Robert Carter who placed 3rd at the Kanawha county Math Field Day for 9th grade. Also congratulations to Danielle Witt who placed as an alternate for grades 10-12. The regionals are next month at the University of Charleston.

ShowCats Awards

The Nitro ShowCats and Nitro SophistiCats are making their mark on the Show Choir Community lately.

At Riverside, The ShowCats won their class, and were awarded 1st Runner Up To Grand Champions, and Best Costumes, and Best Instrumental Ensemble. Louisa Smith was awarded Best Performer. The SophistiCats won Best Costumes and Second Place in their division. MaQuayla Booker was awarded Outstanding Performer.

At Cabell Midland this past weekend, The Nitro ShowCats were awarded Grand Champion in their class, Overall Best Show Design, Advanced to Finals, and were awarded 2nd Runner up to Grand Champion Overall. Louisa Smith won Outstanding Female Soloist and Best Performer. The SophistiCats continue to strut their stuff, being awarded 2nd place in their division, and Chelyan Smith was awarded Outstanding Performer.

A Special Congratulations to Louisa Smith for being selected to the West Virginia All State Choir, and also as a Finalist in the West Virginia Solo and Ensemble Competition. Louisa was selected to perform on the Honors Concert at the West Virginia All State Band And Choir Festival in March.

Congratulations to the Nitro SophistiCats Show Choir for winning Best Costumes and 2nd place in the Girl's division, and to the Nitro ShowCats Show Choir for winning Class B Champions, 1st Runner Up to Grand Champions, Best Costumes, and Best Band at The Riverside Show Choir Competition. Congratulations to MaQuayla Booker and Louisa Smith for winning Judges Choice awards. Way to go ladies and gentlemen for representing Nitro High School with pride.

Mu Alpha Theta

Mu Alpha Theta, the National Mathematics Honorary, will be accepting applications for new members. Applications can be picked up from Mr. Eich in room B107. All applications are due back by next Friday, Feb 3rd. You must have completed all of Algebra II to apply.

Show Choir

The Show Choirs at Nitro are taking pre-orders for Pepperoni Rolls. They are yummy yummy and the prices are 1 for $2.00, or 6 for $8.00, or 12 for $15.00. They are a really good size. Money will be taken up on Monday January 30th, and delivery will be on February 5th.

The Show Choirs are also selling flats of Strawberries. $14.00 for a 1/2 flat, and $26.00 for a full flat. Sale will end soon, and delivery will be between February 27th and March 3rd.

Baseball

Any student interested in playing baseball needs to be at a meeting this Thursday, January 26th at 5pm in the commons. Anyone needing a physical form can pick them up in the office.

Prom Tickets

 Prom is May 6th this year, here at Nitro High School. Prom tickets go on sale January 30th. The price will be $20 single and $40 a couple. Act fast because this is a limited time offer only. Senior Trip

Seniors, there is still time to place your deposit for the senior trip to Cedar Point on 5/15. Cost of trip is $100 and includes, charter bus, park admission, unlimited drink wristband, and pizza for trip home. Seats are limited, there will only be one bus. Reserve your spot today!

Hack-a-thon

Exciting Opportunity for Juniors and Seniors! University of Charleston is hosting a Hack-a-thon in their brand new, state of the art Russell & Martha Wehrle Innovation Center Saturday, January 28th-Sunday the 29th. UC is inviting high school juniors & seniors to visit the campus for an overnight, intense and exciting experience where they will "hack" through some problems and come up with solutions for those problems and explore the business opportunities related to the solutions. They will be guided by experts & mentors & other students and, at the end of the event, they will "pitch" their solutions. On the table are innovation scholarships valued at 20 thousand per year if the student would decide to come to the University of Charleston. This award can be made in their junior year. They will also have prizes for excellence in the process. This is a FREE opportunity you should definitely take advantage of. You do not need to be interested in business to attend. Prom Meeting

 Okay Wildcats...the time is approaching quickly. This year's prom will be Saturday, May 6th here at Nitro High School. If you had any part in it last year, you know you won't want to miss this year's! Tickets will be going on sale real soon!

With that being said, there will be a Prom Committee Meeting Wednesday during anchor block. Juniors who are on Gold Pass, who are willing to work hard, and who are wanting to make this year's prom the best-- will need to meet in Mrs. Kerber's room (room 215) each Wednesday during anchor period. Please be on time.

Important Anchor Information

Excellent job students and teachers. We have seen a 3% decrease in class failures in relation to last year, therefore to reward our students for this improvement all students will receive a gold pass for January 4th, 5th and 6th.  On Tuesday January 3rd all underclassmen are to report to their scheduled anchor.
