Senior Night and Smarter Balanced Recognition Football Game

Our senior night festivities will began at 6:15pm tonight.  Come to the game early and help us recognize our seniors.  Then stick around until halftime and watch one of our most enjoyable events of the year.  We will be individually calling out the names of each one of our Elementary and Middle School students who scored proficient on the Smarter Balanced test while the young scholars run across the football field.  Every year we get a great turnout for both events and we look forward to seeing everyone there tonight.

The History and Origin of Veterans' Day

The History and Origin of Veterans' Day

Please take the time to remember the history and significance of Veterans’ Day as you prepare to join the nation in a day of reflection and remembrance tomorrow, Friday, November 11th—Veterans’ Day 2016.

In 1918, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month, the world rejoiced and celebrated. After four years of bitter war, an armistice was signed. The "war to end all wars" was over. November 11, 1919 was set aside as Armistice Day in the United States, to remember the sacrifices that men and women made during World War I in order to ensure a lasting peace. On Armistice Day, soldiers who survived the war marched in a parade through their home towns. Politicians and veteran officers gave speeches and held ceremonies of thanks for the peace they had won.

Congress voted Armistice Day a federal holiday in 1938, 20 years after the war ended. But Americans realized that the previous war would not be the last one. World War II began the following year and nations great and small again participated in a bloody struggle. After the Second World War, Armistice Day continued to be observed on November 11. In 1953 townspeople in Emporia, Kansas called the holiday Veterans' Day in gratitude to the veterans in their town. Soon after, Congress passed a bill introduced by a Kansas congressman renaming the federal holiday to Veterans' Day. In 1971 President Nixon declared it a federal holiday on the second Monday in November.

Americans still give thanks for peace on Veterans' Day. There are ceremonies and speeches and at 11:00 in the morning, most Americans observe a moment of silence, remembering those who fought for peace. Veterans gather at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. to place gifts and stand quiet vigil at the names of their friends and relatives who fell in the Vietnam War.

The City of Charleston will hold their 75th Annual Veteran’s Day Parade beginning at 10:00AM tomorrow, Sat., Nov 11th 2016. Nitro High School participants will include our own AFJROTC Honor Guard and Marching Band. Please come out and pay tribute to our Veterans.

Sharing Time For Life's Hurts

Today during lunch we will have different colored ribbons in the commons representing all cancers. If you have someone that has been affected by cancer, we are encouraging everyone to write the name of the person that has won the battle, currently are fighting, or lost their battle with cancer. These ribbons will be displayed in the commons. Our hope is that this spreads the knowledge that we are all together and share the good and bad together as Wildcats. No one is ever alone once entering the halls of Nitro High School.
