AFJROTC National Recognition

Congratulations to Nitro High School's Air Force Junior ROTC program for being recognized as one of just four (4) schools in the State of West Virginia to win the National Distinguished Unit Award for the current academic year. The three other honorees included South Charleston High School, Jefferson High School (Berkley County) and Martinsburg.

195 schools were chosen world-wide out of nearly 900 AFJROTC programs comprised of over 140,000 cadets for this recognition. This award is given to the top 20 percent of all AFJROTC units in the nation. This is the 17th Distinguished Unit Award received in the history of the AFJROTC program at Nitro High School since the program's inception in 1995. This award recognizes Air Force Junior ROTC units that have performed above and beyond normal expectations, and have distinguished themselves through outstanding service to their school and community, while meeting the Air Force Junior ROTC mission of "Developing citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community".

The objectives of the Air Force Junior ROTC program are to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship and life skills; promote community service and service to the United States; instill responsibility, character, and self-discipline through character education, and to provide instruction in air and space fundamentals.
